WHAT TO EXPECT?
Voices of the Rainbow is an adult singing project packed with fun, heart-warming songs that will put a smile on your face as part of the Rainbow Voices Project. The sessions will start online, and singers will have the option to stay online or move to in-person when regulations allow.  We will learn songs online that we plan to sing once we can meet up in person later in the summer. As restrictions start to ease we know that everyone will feel differently about what they are ready to do. We will offer a range of opportunities to sing over the coming months, both in-person at community venues in the Sunderland Coalfields area and online, so that everyone can choose what suits them.

If you haven’t sung online yet, we will be offering technical support along with a ‘cuppa & natter’ from 7.15pm each week, so there’s plenty of time to socialise too. We’ve already helped over 100 singers access online sessions since March 2020, so even if you’re not very tech-savvy we will be able to get you set up quickly.

WHAT WILL WE SING?
We sing a wide range of feel-good music including pop, gospel, musical theatre and world music to warm the mind, body & soul. Many of our songs are well-known tunes such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Walking on Sunshine and Count on Me. Some may be totally unknown and we will introduce you to uplifting pieces from around the world. And others are old favourites from musicals such as Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. We use a mixture of a cappella, piano-accompanied and backing tracks in our arrangements which we find helps our sessions to be fun and accessible to all. The songs will be taught online by The Singing Elf founder Rebecca McGarvie and vocal tutor Sinead Livingston, and you will have access to everything you need to take part, including word sheets.

IS ANY SINGING IN PERSON?

The sessions will start online, and move to in-person when regulations allow. During the next few weeks, we will be consulting our singers and trialing different set-ups for in-person singing, including both indoor and outdoor sessions. At the moment (6th July 2021), indoor singing is limited to a maximum of 6 people (including the music leader), and outdoor singing is limited to 30 people. We are committed to offering outdoor singing as a minimum this summer, although these sessions might not take place on Tuesday evenings, based on the weather and venue availability.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
Our Tuesday sessions are free, although donations are very welcome. You choose if and what to donate. You can donate during booking, or at any point during the project via our Donate page. Some singers prefer to make one donation at the start, whilst others prefer to donate weekly – it’s up to you. You can join in with the whole project or just drop into the sessions that work for you – we know that life needs to be flexible for us all right now. You’ll be able to listen to recordings of any of the songs you miss in between sessions via our website.

This session is funded by Sunderland City Council, and is open to anyone.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This is a live online session, you can log on from any location via any mobile device, laptop or computer with an internet connection. It’s quick & easy to download the free Zoom app we will be using. Don’t worry if you’re not very techie – we’ll provide full instructions and guide you through the process. To take part you just need to be able to hear sound from your device, a camera to be seen and microphone to be heard. If you’re using a mobile device or laptop these are often built-in features. Find full instructions of how to use Zoom here
