Welcome to Rainbow Voices

Rainbow Voices is a creative project, bursting with colour and full of hope.

Launching on Tuesday 23rd March to mark the anniversary of the 1st national lockdown, Rainbow Voices aims to help our community reflect on our experience this past year, reconnect with each other and begin the process of rebuilding in life after lockdown. The programme will include a mix of creative activities to do at home, online sessions and in-person events in Summer 2021!

Rainbow Voices is a project of hope. In the first phase, we will ‘bring back the rainbow’ into our local community by encouraging everyone to fill their windows with colourful paper crafts and sending hundreds of handmade cards with messages of hope to those who need it most.

In the summer we will be going on tour with in-person community events in and around Durham City & Houghton-le-Spring to help us all re-connect after lockdown. There will be family-friendly crafts & activities, stalls and of course - singing!

About Rainbow Voices

We want to involve the whole community in the project. Rainbow Voices will be rolled out in phases from March-August 2021.

Phase 1 - Bring Back the Rainbow
1,000 FREE Rainbow Craft Envelopes will be available to the residents, businesses & community groups of Zone 2 in March 2021. Any individual household can get their envelope from a local collection point or receive one via a community group they are connected to. All pupils of West Rainton, Pittington or Sherburn Primary have been sent an envelope via their school.

Phase 2: Rainbow Activity Packs
After Easter, the project will expand to our funded Zones 3 - 6.

950 FREE Rainbow Craft & Wellbeing Packs will be available to those most affected by pandemic. Unlike the envelopes which are available to anyone in the zone, these packs are specifically for people hit the hardest, such as those feeling isolated, lonely or struggling with their mental health.

Phase 3: Sunderland Coalfields
Thanks to funding from Sunderland City Council, the project will also be expanding to specific parts of the Coalfield Area of Sunderland.

We look forward to announcing details in due course.

We would love to offer more opportunities for people to get their envelopes, and for community groups to get involved. Please help us connect with all the groups, organisations & businesses in your village including clubs, societies and groups, churches and community centres, pubs, cafes and restaurants, GP surgeries, chemists, post offices, shops, hair & beauty salons, businesses - who can all take part in this project as a GROUP, SPACE, or both.

A GROUP can get involved by:
Distributing envelopes to their members | Adopting a window to decorate | Volunteering to help to deliver to vulnerable people in our community
Groups might include a club, society, church or charity - for example the local Brownies or WI.

A SPACE can get involved by:
Displaying posters & flyers | Being a collection point (providing a small space to display an A4 sized box) | Decorating window spaces | Allowing a group to adopt a window & decorate it for you

Spaces might include shops, pubs, GP surgeries or village halls.
