Hello from The Singing Elf
Hello! I’m Rebecca McGarvie, Director of The Singing Elf Social Enterprise.
I’m a vocal tutor and event manager based near Durham in north east England. I run group singing workshops, courses and events for adults. I specialise in working with complete beginners; people who love to sing but aren't sure if they can! Singing has always been a huge part of my life and I believe it’s a lifelong journey; it’s never too early or too late to start and there’s no such thing as ‘I can’t sing’ – everyone has a voice, some people just need a little more help to find it. I decided to call myself The Singing Elf because I believe that elves are energetic, cheeky and just a little bit magical. I’m definitely not a traditional tutor, I like to mix things up and keep everyone (including me) on my toes, so I guess being an Elf just suits me.

Rainbow Voices is a creative project, bursting with colour and full of hope. Launched on 23rd March 2021 to mark the anniversary of the 1st national lockdown, the project will work across several local areas and continue into summer ‘21. Rainbow Voices aims to help our community reflect on our experience this past year, reconnect with each other and begin the process of rebuilding in life after lockdown.
The project will ‘bring back the rainbow’ in our local communities, providing free, family friendly crafts to residents within our funded areas and encouraging everyone to fill their windows with colour. Hundreds of handmade greetings cards will also be sent with messages of hope to those in our communities who may be lonely or need cheering up.
We have activities and workshops available to hire. We deliver sessions that are tailored to each group and focus on the enjoyment of group singing. We lead sessions for groups of adults in a variety of settings including:
- Ladies & WI Groups
- Church & Community Groups
- Training Days
- Celebration Events
- Fundraising Events
Unity is a community choir for adults who love to sing but aren't sure if they're any good! We welcome all abilities including complete beginners and 'I can't' singers as well as returning voices. We sing a wide range of uplifting, feel-good music in a wide range of musical styles that put a smile on our faces. I'm incredibly lucky to lead such a friendly, hard-working and open bunch of humans. We challenge, encourage and support each other, constantly pushing ourselves to achieve things we never thought we would. Our weekly sessions are full of laughter and help to replenish my soul even during the toughest of weeks.
